Smokey eye makeup, how to do smokey eyes

Sexy, Smokey Eyes - how to do smokey eyes, smokey eyes tutorial and smokey eye makeup for girls.

I was recently asked to do an article for the San Diego Union Tribune on achieving the smokey eye look. I have to admit, it was a mild challenge trying to break down each step. I have never actually thought of it in that way! I kind of just do what I do. But, I did break it down, and hopefully it’s easy enough for you to follow!

The comments made on the UT website had me cracking up. Thankfully, no one (as of yet!) had anything rude to say about my work, but it seems that more than a couple of people most definitely do not think that make-up is news worthy!

Crazy talk!!! What could possibly be more fun to read about (and talk about, practice, shop for…) than make-up?! And hello people – it’s the Smart Living section. What do you expect to be in there??

Smoky eyes are dramatic and sexy. But they’re also extremely difficult to do yourself. So Jessica Metivier, a local makeup artist who recently relocated to Los Angeles, walked us through it.

“A smoky eye is what I get the most requests for,” she said. “It never seems to go out of style.”

How to do a smokey eye. What you’ll need:

• Blending brush (a long brush with soft bristles that flare out)
• Dome brush (a soft brush that tapers to a dome shape)
• Small dome brush
• Angled brush (a brush with angled bristles)
• Concealer
• Black kohl pencil
• Nude shadow
• Gray shadow
• Black shadow
• Brown shadow (Shades vary depending on skin tone).

Metivier worked with a black and gray palette because that’s what her clients like best. But she said modern versions of the look can be achieved with plums, navy blues and metallics.

One step at a time for easy smokey eye.

Prep eyes with concealer and powder to give the eye shadow something to stick to.
Using the blending brush, sweep a nude shadow from your eyelid and all the way up to the brow bone.

With the dome-shaped brush, apply gray shadow starting at the outer corners of the eye and blending into the crease. Continue to blend gray onto eyelid, staying away from the inner corner of the eye. “Basically, don’t cover the entire lid with gray, only the outer three-quarters,” Metivier said.

Line the top lid and bottom rim with a black kohl pencil.

Dip the angle brush into black shadow and smudge the liner on the top lid, creating a smoky effect.

Using the domed brush, apply black shadow into outer corner and just into outer crease of eyelids for added depth and dimension.

Take the fluffy brush and dip it into the brown shadow. Use this in the crease only, to blend in the gray and add more texture.

Go back to the blending brush and nude shadow — highlight brow bones and inner corners of the eyes.

Use the angle brush and black shadow to create a slight smudge at the bottom of the eye.
Curl lashes and apply two layers of jet black mascara.

Red carpet inspiration for brown smokey eye.

Smoky eyes are still a red carpet staple, and there were plenty of smoldering looks at last Sunday’s Oscars ceremony.

Miley Cyrus stepped away from her squeaky image with plenty of drama around the eyes.
And from the waist up, Zoe Saldana looked impeccable thanks to these beautifully bold eyes. Too bad the bottom of her dress was a disaster.

Shortcuts.

If you’re the kind of person who thinks all those makeup brushes and eye shadows are still too advanced, there are some products available that give you a super fast, more casual smoky eye.

CoverGirl’s Smoky Shadow Blast: It’s a shadow stick that achieves the look in just two steps. They’re available at drugstores for about $8.

Too Faced’s Smoky Eye Palette: This compact kit has a variety of hues and neutrals, along with two brushes and an instruction booklet. It’s at Sephora for $34.

Korre’s Smoky Eyes Made Easy Collection: A complete set that includes mascara, four eye shadows, eyeliner and even light pink lip gloss. Available at Sephora and Amazon for about $40.

Metivier’s tips and smokey eye tutorial.

Metivier offers some advice about wearing this look:

• Never pair a strong lip color with smoky eyes. Light lip glosses are best.

• People with small eyes should avoid smoky eyes because it makes their eyes look even smaller.

• When working with dark colors, always apply eye makeup first so you can clean up the fallout around your eyes without messing up your face.

• Keep a kohl pencil in your purse to reapply throughout the evening.
